Surprises at a Lloyd Harbor Park that has Both Beach and Forest

Tucked in at the end of West Neck Road in Lloyd Harbor is Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge, a quiet, lightly visited park named after a natural feature known for providing artillery practice for the British in the War for American Independence.

On a quiet late summer afternoon I was treated to some pleasant surprises.

What's better than a summer (or autumn) weekend on the North Fork?

When my parents used to drive my sisters and me out to visit Grandma in Wisconsin in the 60's, we'd stay at a new invention, not a hotel, but a motor-hotel, or "motel." Not very fancy, just a row of rooms along the highway, with the back windows facing a cornfield. My sisters and I were thrilled.

One of our favorite late afternoon jaunts is to venture down the Cedar Creek Park to Jones Beach bicycle trail. Cedar Creek Park is a Nassau County facility a mile or so west of the Seaford - Oyster Bay Expressway on Merrick Road. After 5 there is no out-of-county resident fee.

Park your car at the first lot on your left, unload the bikes, and you're off!
