Diamonds!! Who doesn’t like diamonds!!!
I think we all can admit that at one time or another we have been drawn to the exquisite beauty of a fine gem or diamond solitaire. Exotic gems are so much a part of our romantic culture, whether they be displayed in earrings, bracelets, necklaces or the ever present engagement ring, that the mere sight of one of those “little blue boxes” can stir the heart with anticipation and affection.
So what should one do once they have received such an elegant, and perhaps expensive gift? That is where David Lash comes in.

David Lash G.G. is not your ordinary diamond guy. He is a HUGE Mets fan!
Seriously though – David is a graduate Gemologist from the Gemological Institute of America and has degrees in Diamonds, Diamond Grading and Colored Stones. Moreover, David is a member of the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers – an organization whose members specialize in appraising only gems and jewelry.
Recently, Living Huntington sat down with David to get the inside scoop on his business...
David – How long have you been in the area?
I have been researching and appraising fine gems from all over the world for decades but I came to Huntington with my family a little over 10 years ago and it has been a great community to work in.
What is your focus at Northeast Gemological?
Northeast Gemological focuses on gemstone and jewelry appraisals. For example, if you have a ring and are curious about its value – say for insurance purposes - you can bring it in to our office for a full assessment.
I examine every stone personally with the client during a private appointment. This way we can sit together and I can examine your stone properly (and rest assured - the stone will never leave your sight). Once I have examined the gem, I will explain everything about my assessment, both the “good” and the “bad”, the gem quality, the setting, the casting etc., so when you leave my office you can feel confident that you know everything about your piece.
What other services do you provide?
Northeast Gemological offers a comprehensive suite of services from Diamond Grading, Gem Identification, and Jewelry Appraisal to Estate Appraisals and more. I give one-on-one attention to the customer. I dedicate my time and efforts ensuring they are pleased with their assessment, learn something about their gems and have a positive experience.
Do you ever help people before they buy a gem or ring etc.?
As a matter of fact, yes. I offer personal shopping and onsite appraisals as well. Sometimes the process of buying a ring, or other piece of jewelry, can be quite daunting. I'm always happy to work with customers to try and make them as informed and comfortable with the process and a ring can be a big (and special) investment.
What advice can you give a couple that has recently gotten engaged or acquired a special gem or piece of jewelry?
For a newly engaged couple, they should have their stone appraised right away to know the true value of the stone and be able to insure it properly. It is also a good idea to bring in any stone or gem you have been given as a gift, inherited or purchased from an estate to get appraised as well. Knowing the true value of your keepsakes is important in case of loss or theft.
Can you believe most engagement rings are lost within the first month being engaged? That's a fact!
Any parting thoughts David?
I just would like to share that I really enjoy working in this community. I've had the good fortune to cross paths with many interesting people in town here and I look forward to coming to work every day. Go Mets!!
David thanks again for your time – we look forward to seeing you soon
