For Broadway Theater Enthusiasts, the Best Kept Secret on Long Island

I've been a season ticket holder for the John W. Engeman Theater on Main Street in Northport for most of their 10 year history, and I cannot believe there is a single ticket available for any of their shows, especially this 10th Anniversary blockbuster lineup: Mamma Mia, 1776, Mary Poppins, The Full Monty, Jekyll & Hyde, and Oklahoma. They also host a slew of special events at the Engeman, in addition.

What was Walt Whitman doing in Huntington on his 19th birthday?

The venerable Long-Islander newspaper was founded 178 years ago (1838), right here in downtown Huntington by 19 year old Walt Whitman. The barn where the Long-Islander started is no more, covered now by a parking lot, but Walt's paper still exists. He did it all in those days: writing, editing, delivering, even typesetting. A plaque was placed by the Press Club in the Gerard Street parking lot across from the Huntington Post Office on Walt's 197th birthday, May 31, 2016.

A Great Restaurant Find in Cold Spring Harbor for Jazz Lovers

When it's time for that "just us two" date or a gathering of special friends, we gravitate to Grasso's in Cold Spring Harbor on 25A.

The draw for us is the intimate speakeasy ambiance, enhanced by the clinking of classes and the animated conversation in the bar, and energized by the accomplished jazz combos on the floor. We always try to sit close to the performers, and have enjoyed at least a half dozen different groups.

A Delightful Northshore Sunset Dining Experience

A Delightful Northshore Sunset Dining Experience

Living on one of the country's longest islands, one that points toward the northeast, you would think there would be dozens, if not hundreds of sunset view restaurants to choose from.

Sadly, you'd be mistaken.

If you're like us, and just want a romantic sunset dinner once in a while, try Ocean at the Crescent Beach Club in Bayville. We discovered it when it was named the Pine Island Grill, and have returned frequently.

When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, she needs a lot more than medical help. She needs rides to and from treatments, babysitting, grocery delivery, medical navigation, wigs, recovery garments and so much more.

With a staggeringly high rate of occurrence, there are countless women that cannot afford to go through treatment with the proper care and dignity. Many also need free mammograms to help with early detection.

Palate Pleasures: Tips and Tricks from the Acai Berry Bowl Queen

We're excited to announce the newest addition to our publication, "Palate Pleasures" which will feature delectable recipes focusing on clean eating with an occasional scrumptious cocktail idea.

Last summer, I discovered acai (ahhh-sigh- eeee) berry bowls when my girlfriend brought one over for me one crazy morning of moving. We took a break from the moving madness, and she and I sat at the kitchen table and escaped into delicious smoothie-in- a-bowl heaven. I was hooked. And of course had to figure out how to make them myself.

LOCAL VOICES: Jolie Andreoni of Enchanted Chambers: How to make a nursery Pinterest worthy

Not that I have anything against Pottery Barn kids, because I don’t, they were the coveted nursery designer of the millennium, but this decade has broadened the horizon of home design.

With apps like Houzz and Pinterest one no longer has to wait for their catalogue to pine over a dresser they could never afford. A quick search for “girl nurseries,” brings forth an onslaught of craftily decorated berths worthy of Hollywood’s kin.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” — Margaret Mead, anthropologist

Huntington and Long Island are rich with beautiful beaches, boating and sea life. This is a very big part of our local Long Island culture in our community and our world. Several International Au Pairs from InterExchange Au Pair USA joined over 500,000 volunteers worldwide to help clean our local Long Island coastlines. While the au pairs here in the US come from over 40 countries, we are all connected and affected by our environment.
