That way we can truly appreciate the full implications of living in this modern age of pillow abundance!
1. Ancient Pillow History
Pillows appear to have entered the historical record around 7,000 BC, as used by the early civilizations of Mesopotamia. In this early pillow era, they were considered a status symbol indicative of affluence - therefore, they were only owned by wealthy families. But these weren’t the cofortable pillows we know and love today. The pillows of this age were made of stone and were primarily designed for the purpose of stopping bugs from crawling into the ears of well-to-do citizens.
2. Ancient Egyptian Headrests
Modern man may prefer their pillows soft and fluffy, but the ancient Egyptians were somewhat more formal and actually used a headrest to bridge the gap between the shoulder and head while sleeping. These headrests, above and beyond providing a comfortable sleeping position, also enabled the circulation of air around the head, a definite plus in the hot desert climate of Egypt.
3. Ancient Chinese Pillows
Ancient Chinese pillows, across many Dynasties, were traditionally solid and made from a wide range of materials including bamboo, jade, porcelain, wood, and bronze. These pillows tended to be highly ornate, were produced in a variety of shapes, and were decorated with painted pictures of animals, humans, and plants on them. Today, these pillows are highly sought by collectors because of their artistic merit and value.
In approximately 500 BC, Chinese philosopher Confucius - who is widely considered as one of the most important and influential individuals in affecting the lives of humanity - mused on the necessity of pillows by stating: "With coarse rice to eat, with water to drink, and my bended arm for a pillow -- I have still joy in the midst of these things.”
5. Greek and Roman Pillows
Much to our pleasure today, the Greeks and Romans of ancient Europe pioneered the creation of softer pillow types. They used cloth stuffed with reeds, feathers, and straw in their successful bid to bring more comfort into the fine art of pillow production. A Bonus Thought: Do you think it was the increased softness of pillows and the resulting improvement in sleep quality that eventually led to the Renaissance?
6. The Great Pillow Ban
It has been spoken that, during his reign in the 1500s, King Henry VIII banned the use of soft pillows with the exception of use by pregnant women. Can you imagine the pillow police showing up in your bedroom under the cover of night and confiscating all of your comfy contraband?
7. Dreams of a Geisha
The process of becoming a Japanese Geisha is a long and arduous one; and their rigorous instruction made them subject to rules governing their physical appearance while awake - and also while sleeping. Part of the ritual training required Geisha-apprentices to sleep on a taka-makura, or "tall pillow” which was designed to elevate their necks and heads without touching their complex hairdos (which were time-consuming to create and expected to last for several days at a time). In some cases, rice would be placed beneath the taka-makura and any Geisha-apprentice found to have rice in her hair upon awakening would be subject to disciplinary measures.
8. The Industrial Revolution
Eventually, the industrial revolution occurred - bringing with it comfortable pillows for the masses. Finally, we could all afford a soft and snug place to place our heads at the end of the day! You get a pillow! You get a pillow! EVERYONE gets pillows!!!
