Escapes: Drive North Into 60s Nostalgia at Woodstock

'Escapes' is a recurring feature on Living Huntington that we put together to serve as inspiration for your future daytrips and 'not-too-far-away' road trips. Have you been somewhere interesting lately? Let us know, and maybe we'll feature it in a future installment!

If you're contemplating a peaceful quick getaway back to the simpler times of the 60's, why not experience Woodstock, only 2 hours north of NYC?

The small town is a throw-back to the days of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and the peace movement. The spirit is still alive in the coffee shops (Shindig has the best breakfast), bakeries (don't miss Bread Alone), 60's memorabilia shops (try Legends, with the Blues Brothers in front) and restaurants (Joshua's Cafe is a perennial favorite, as well as Cucina).

Red is back! Better than ever.

Red is back! Better than ever.

Living Huntington wishes to bring you insights into the unique characters and establishments in Huntington, in an effort to make us all feel more connected and more a part of this wonderful town.

Recently, we had the chance to sit down with one of the iconic restaurateurs in Huntington recently, Nino Antuzzi of Red, Sapsuckers, Osterio Da Nino, and Kala Luna, to discuss the renaissance of Red after a fire in the building next door, and some of the secrets to his success in business.

Red was open and thriving on a Saturday night in December 2014 at 7:00pm when a friendly waitress from Besito's restaurant across the street knocked frantically on the window, pointing up at the building next door. "There is a fire, upstairs!"

Farewell to a Huntington tradition: PrideFest in Hecksher Park

Farewell to a Huntington tradition: PrideFest in Hecksher Park

Two days before the recent tragedy in Orlando, FL, members and supporters of the LGBT community gathered in Hecksher Park, Huntington, as they had for over 2 decades, to celebrate at PrideFest - the 26th Annual Long Island Pride Celebration.

Huntington has hosted the festival, and in most years a parade, since the middle 90's.

Always a colorful and upbeat gathering, this year was no exception. 10,000 Maniacs and Black Box performed, and dozens of community organizations were there to share the fun.

Local Voices: Remembering Dad at his favorite place on Father's Day

Local Voices: Remembering Dad at his favorite place on Father's Day

The closest thing my dad had to a hobby was the occasional after work swim at West Neck Beach in Lloyd Harbor.

When he wasn't raising three children, leading several non-profit organizations, or building a couple of small businesses in town, he was wrapped up in local politics, twice as Town Councilman and once as Supervisor. He would collect a couple of us kids and head down to West Neck, where he couldn't wait to enter the water. From the shallow water, we'd watch his long, loping rhythmic stroke, back and forth. He loved to be out in the water. I think it brought him peace.
